Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife and partner Melinda announced Monday that they are divorcing after 27 years of marriage.
The announcement, made by one of the richest couples in the world, with an estimated $ 130 billion, was made in a joint statement on Twitter.
“After much thought and effort on our relationship, we decided to end our marriage,” they said.
The statement said they would continue their work in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a major grant that supports global health programs, gender equality, education and other causes.
“We continue to believe in that work and we will continue to work together on a foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as married people in the next phase of our lives.”
The announcement comes two years after the separation of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, one of the richest people in the world, and his wife MacKenzie.
Bill Gates, aged 65, was a talented young man who started out as one of the world’s most important companies, and for a time he was the richest man in the world and a man of extraordinary generosity.
He stepped down as chief executive of Microsoft in 2008 and devoted much time to helping people and later left the board, retaining only the title “founder and technical advisor.”
Melinda Gates, 56, married her husband in 1994 while working at a technology firm. They have three children together.
