Fall Of Teachers Unions: Teachers Gang Up To Exit From Teachers Union

Teachers unions are now facing threats from class teachers. Sources indicated that classroom teachers in all 47 counties have organized themselves to form their own union; Kenya National Union of Classroom Teachers (KNUCT).

Most teachers blamed the unions for misrepresenting and signing the non-profit CBA by Kuppet and KNUT. Recently teacher unions signed off on non-monetary CBAs to cover a four-year period following the end of the 2017-2021 CBA, with administrators making big bucks.

The Teachers Service Commission blamed COVID-19-19 for non-monetary CBAs and stopped all increments for public servants for two years following the Pay Commission directives.

Talks hit a hard rock last month when TSC pulled off a shocker at the Safari Park Hotel. The entrance to the negotiating table posed a challenge to union officials; It was a dramatic entrance.

In addition to the COVID-19-19 certificate, each member was expected to produce his HUDUMA card as well as enter the Tsc number to prove its relevance and validity. The stringent requirements threw the Federalists into an emergency meeting 1 hour before the negotiations in the parking yard. Already TSC President Dr. Muturi and his team were present at the venue waiting for the other parties.

They are later joined by eight union officers (5 from KUSNET, 2 from Knut and 1 from KUPPET) who meet the requirements at the entrance. The chairman of the committee called for an adjournment for the meeting quorum constraint; But eight federalists lobbied to include the trapped officials as friends of the negotiating committee.

Those who were later appointed for lack of requirements include Akelo Missori, Secretary General of KUPPET, who became a teacher to me after his retirement 2 years ago, Omboko Milemba, President of KUPPET, is retired of TSC and at the top He resigned from the commission. Seeking elected office as Member of Parliament of Imuhaya Constituency. His counterparts Ronald Tonui and Wambilianga are also MLAs. A group of KNUT officers were initiated and ordered to remain silent during the meeting.

The chairman of the commission, Dr. J. Muturi and CEO The CBA deal was sealed at 11.30 a.m. after brief talks by Dr. Nancy Macharia.

The commission’s representatives got up to leave; But Akello Missori begged to be allowed to speak for two minutes. He then begged the commission that seemed reluctant to heed it to consider recognizing them as part-time teachers’ servants. He requested an appointment with the commission to put some things in order.

Our team later learned that most of the officials of the National Union were illegitimate to deal with the affairs of teachers as some retired while others resigned to venture into greener pastures. Also some executive secretaries in the branches are holding their positions illegally after resigning to give them a shot at national politics.

For lack of representation of teachers now it is Teachers Service Commission which pulls strings for its benefit
