List Of Universities and Colleges In Kenya

In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the higher education sector in Kenya. Where there were only five public universities in the country in 2005, today 22 have plans for 20 new universities. Growth in the university sector has been largely due to the upgrading of existing colleges.

Here is a list of Kenyan universities and colleges. Kenya has many universities and other institutions of higher learning. There are 22 public universities, 14 private universities and 13 universities with a Letter of Interim Authority (LIA).

These universities are established by the institutions of Parliamentary institutions under the Universities Act, 2012 which provides for the development of university education, the establishment, accreditation and management of universities.

University Admission
Admission to public universities is regulated by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service, established in 2014 to replace the Joint Accreditation Board.

Admission to the University is based on a Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum standard of C + (an average of 8), including English, Swahili and compulsory mathematics) traditionally set as a minimum. Some university departments sometimes require high marks in certain subjects related to the field of study. In recent years, due to the high demand for university facilities, the minimum limit for guaranteed admission to a public university has been increased to B, although the limit is expressed as eight points for combined topics – where subject ranks are converted points – not from standard.

In 2014, the degree programs were set at 60 (B) points for men and 58 (B-) for women. The limit for diploma programs was at the lowest level of C-grade

There are 17 private universities and 14 public and private colleges in the university. The other 14 institutions have provisional authority documents to operate. All the university colleges below have the mandate to offer a degree.
