Ministry of Education CS Directs School Heads To Return Extra Fees Changed To Parents

The education ministry has ordered all public secondary school heads to refund all fees taken out of the fees the government had recommended.

In a circular sent to all county and sub-county directors, the education ministry further said that no school is allowed to send students home to collect dues that have been prescribed.

The circular states, “Any fees collected above the revised guidelines shall be refunded or treated as prepayment of fees for continuing students. Non-payment of such fees shall result in any Even the child will not be sent away.”

As per the school fee guidelines recommended by the government, the National School is set at Sh45,054, the County Schools at Sh35,035, while the Day Schools are free.


In the memorandum, the ministry also said that they have received several complaints from parents who have paid extra money over and above the prescribed amount.

Education PS also said that disciplinary action will be taken against all the responsible education officers in case of non-receipt of any case of charging extra fee by any school.

“Your report should be submitted to the Director Secondary through the email address for compilation and further processing,”

“Any school which wishes to charge more than the prescribed fee should make a formal request to the Cabinet Secretary and charge the fee only after getting written permission.” Part of the memorandum reads.
