Revised List of all teachers’ job groups as established by TSC In Secondary Schools

The teachers service commission categorises teachers” grades in two, i.e entry grades and promotional grades. Entry grades comes when one is immediately employed by the commission while promotional grades comes with satifying the commission/s set requirements. These grades have been enlisted in the teachers’ career progression 2018.

In accordance to career progression 2018, there are thirteen (13) grades. They include:

1. Secondary School Teacher III ( T- Scale 6)

This is the entry grade for a diploma holder teacher. For one to ascend to this job group, must have a diploma in education with a mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE level. Must also be registered by the commission and have at leats two teaching subjects with a minimum od a C+ PLUS IN THE TWO TEACHING subjects.

2. Secondary School Teacher II ( T- Scale 7)

This grade accommodates two categories of teachers. It accomodates the holders of Bachelor’s degree in education which is their entry grade. On the sane nite, it is also a promotional grade for diploma holders in education.

For one to ascend to this job group, must have a bachelor’s degree in education with a mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE level. Must also be registered by the commission and have at leats two teaching subjects with a minimum od a C+ PLUS IN THE TWO TEACHING subjects.

Other category of teachers are those with a degree in relevant are with two teaching subjects and must have a PGDE. But for one with PGDE, one must have gone for teaching practice to gather teaching exposure.

3. Secondary school teacher I ( T- scale 8)

This grade happens to be a promotional grade for high school teachers. For one to ascend to this job group, one must have served as a teacher I at grade T-Scale 8 for not less than (3) three years.

4. Senior Master IV (T- Scale 9)

This job group is preserved for promotions and school administrators in high schools. For one to be appointed into this grade, must have served as secondary teacher I ( T- Scale 8) for not less than 3 years.

5. Senior Master III ( T- Scale 10)

This grade is preserved for administrative promotions in secondary schools. For one to be appointed to this grade, one must have served as senior master IV for not less than three years.

6. Senior Master II ( T- Scale 11)

For school administrators, this grade is meant for their promotions. For one to ne promoted to this grade, must have served as senior master III for at least three years.

7. Senior master I ( T- Scale 12)

According to the career progression 2018, this grade is a promotional grade for institutional administrators. For one to qualify to enter this job group, one must have served as senior master II or deputy principal III in t- Scale 11for a period not less than (3) three years with respect to the career progression guidelines teachers 2018.

8. Deputy Principal III ( T- Scale 11)

This grade is a promotional grade and an entry grade for deputy principals in secondary schools. For one to ascend to this job group, one must have served as senior master III in T- Scale 10 for a period of not less than (3) three years.

9. Deputy Principal II ( T- Scale 12)

This grade is preserved for promotions of deputy principals in secondary school. For one to be promoted to this grade, one must have served as deputy principal III or senior master II T-Scale 11 for a period not less than (3) three years.

10. Deputy Principal I ( T- SCALE 13)

This happens to be a promotional grade for deputies in high school. For one to ascend to this grade, one must satisfy the two requirements set by the commission which include but not limited to; serving as senior master I T- Scale 12 for a period not less than (3) three years and also one must be a masters holder in a relevant area.

11. Principal ( T- Scale 13)

Only administrators in secondary schools can be promoted to this grade.  For you to be promoted to this grade, you must have served as deputy principal II OR  senior master I T-Scale 12 for a period not less than three years and be a holder of a master’s degree in relevant area.

12. Senior Principal ( T- Scale 14)

This grade is preserved for promotion of administrators in secondary schools. This grade is very competitive and is subject to availability of similar vacancies in institutions. One must have worked for not less than three years as a principal or deputy principal I T-Scale 13 and also be in possession of a master’s degree in a relevant area.

13. Chief Principal ( T- Scale 15)

Secondary school teachers can attain this grade as the highest grade in accordance to TSC career progression guideline for teachers 2018. It is preserved for administrators in secondary school. This grade is also competitive and is subject to availability of this vacancy in an institution. For one to qualify to this grade, one must have worked as senior principal T- Scale 14 for a period not less than three years and be a masters holder in a relevant area
