TSC Has Confirmed Deployment Of Over 35,000 P1 Teachers To Secondary, Requirements And Qualifications

The Ministry of Education is working to ensure that new infrastructural facilities are set up to accommodate the alarming number of students attending secondary schools in 2023, which are likely to double admissions.


With regard to the double intake by 2023, the Teachers Service Commission is planning to deploy over 36,341 primary school teachers, who have achieved higher qualifications, after the roll-out of the new curriculum to meet the staffing needs. Will be posted to teach in lower secondary schools. ,




Those who will be posted to teach in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) include P1 teachers who have Diploma, Higher Diploma, Bachelor Degree, Post Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD.


The process of posting of graduate teachers of Primary Teacher Education (PTE) has started. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has started this process and is ready to deploy over 1000 P1 teachers to teach in secondary schools across the country.




In the last two years, TSC has promoted PTE teachers as Secondary School Tutors. In 2019 Teachers Service Commission promoted 1000 teachers and in 2020 commission promoted 1000 teachers. The 2000 P1 teachers who were posted have received posting letters and are now serving in secondary schools.


The Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers (CPG) stipulate that promoted P1 graduate teachers start from job grade C2 with a pay scale of Rs 34,955 per month and will be subject to promotion to job grade C3 after completing three years in C2.




The TSC qualifications and guidelines for the deployment of PTE teachers are as follows:


The applicant must have a P1 certificate;

Applicant must be a Kenyan citizen;

The applicant must be a holder of a bachelor’s degree in education with two teaching subjects;

Must have a minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE or its equivalent and C+ in two teaching subjects.

Must be employer by Teacher Service Commission.


TSC has taken this step to reduce the burden on secondary school teachers due to 100% transition policy to secondary schools for KCSE candidates.


TSC finally pointed out that PTE teachers are deployed competitively and the process is going to be fair, promoting non-discrimination and equality.
