TSC in Mass Promotion of Teachers: How to Qualify

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a move to promote 5,000 teachers from primary to secondary schools.

Teachers’ employers say the move is aimed at bridging the huge capacity gap being experienced after the introduction of the new competency based curriculum (CBC) system of education.

The TSC says the CBC system has shifted most of the education work to secondary schools, leaving primary schools with many teachers but with less work.

The TSC says the teachers who will be promoted will be posted to work in newly started junior secondary schools, which include grades 7, 8 and 9.

However, TSC maintains that promotion will be on merit basis with teachers having bachelor’s degree and average grade of C+ (plus) and above will be considered.

1. Diploma and Degree in Special Needs Education

2. Diploma and Degree in Early Childhood Development Education

3. Diploma in Education (Primary Option)

4. Diploma in Education, Secondary Option

5. Degree in Education (Secondary Option) but lacking C+ in KCSE or C+ in Teaching Subjects

In addition to this promotion, the commission announced that more teachers would be deployed to meet the expected double intake in 2023.

Under the CBC system of education, grade six learners would proceed to grade 7, while standard six students would attend junior secondary schools in the 8-4-4 system.
