TSC New Training Subjects Ahead of CBC Roll Out In Junior and Senior Secondary

In preparation for the roll out of the Competency Based Curriculum both in junior and senior secondary schools, TSC has mapped the training areas that universities and colleges should will train secondary teachers on.

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia through the advisory from the Ministry of Education indicated that the programmes will impart the required skills to teachers who will in turn use it to teach learners in schools as the CBC roll out is set in 2023 for Junior and Senior secondary.

Following the TSC boss directive, the areas of study that needs to be accorded more attention include;

  1. Pre-Technical and Pre-Vocational Education

2. Life skills

3. Agriculture

4. Health Education

5. Indigenous languages

6. Kenya Sign Languages

7. Visual and Performing Arts

The commission further identified gaps in various subjects including;

  • Leatherwork
  • Mandarin
  • Woodwork
  • Technology
  • Plumbing
  • Ceramics

TSC has also indicated that teachers needs to be retrained in subject areas like; Home science, Physical Education and Biology in a bid to facilitate learning in health Education. Those teaching social studies also needs to be retooled on citizenship.

TSC has also indicated that teachers should teach a range of subjects as opposed to the current subjects they are handling which is two subjects in their area of specialization. Therefore, they called upon KICD to design a curriculum that will see teachers teach a number of subjects.

“We recommend and advice that the teacher education program should be flexible and aligned to enable one to teach and instruct a variety of subjects,” said the TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia.
